Amongst the traffic, noise and general sounds of a bustling metropolis, lies a natural environment. This little slice of heaven is called Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center. It is located in the Gateway area of St. Petersburg on 1800 Weedon Drive NE.

This preserve is made up of approximately 3,700 acres of ecological beauty. It was once a true island during the high tides, but now it consists of a low-lying peninsula surrounded by several small islands.

Weedon Island is a must see for nature seeking individuals and their families.  It is open year round for those who enjoy hiking, kayaking, bird watching and more. Walk along one of multiple cat walks to see the mangroves and all the creatures it inhabits right below you. Stroll along the pathway and see if you can spot a native bird perched high in the trees.

The preserve is also home to the Cultural and Natural History Center. The Center hosts exhibits and educational seminars and lectures on a weekly basis.  Check the events calendar for all of the upcoming activities throughout the spring. From book reading, to nature hikes, to marine science lectures, there is something of interest for all ages. It is vital that our community is provided with the educational resources to protect our natural environment for all generations to enjoy.
